History Of Horse Therapy.

"Ancient Greek literature mentioned the use of horse-back riding as therapy. In 600 BC, Orbasis documented the therapeutic benefit of horse riding. In Scandinavia, during the outbreak of poliomyelitis in 1946, this is when equestrian therapy was introduced." (Equestrian Therapy, 2015).
Community Association of Riding of the Disabled, or otherwise known as CARD, was the first therapeutic riding association in the United States and Canada. This association was established in 1960. Research has been conducted by many doctors and therapists to understand why horses help. Some of these researchers are Liz Hartel, Jan Spink, and James Brady. "Research took off like a rocket in the US, as did NARHA, the National Certification and Standards Organization for Therapeutic Riding. From this Foundation began offshoots developed by the professional that implement using the horse in therapy. Thus was born DRT (Developmental Riding Therapy) in 1982." (STEP, n.d.) |
